This is something that has (potentially) driven off at least one LONG time member. Not sure what they were thinking with not at least telling people... I am sure there could be some kind of post count required or something. Oh well.

Who left?

I DON'T F***ING LIKE CHANGE!

Why is it that longtime and even supporting members are not allowed to have links in their signatures, often pointing to helpful information or Flickr, yet new members like Blackfin http://www.thephotoforum.com/forum/...-store-your-credit-cards-etc.html#post2301527 get to continue spamming a blog link full of google adsense ads without repercussion?

That's not actually a signature tough - it's in the body of the message...

(I do agree with you though.)

I have to say that this new policy is the perfect way to drive away long standing members of the forum... I can only assume that was the goal, given the total lack of anything even resembling giving a **** what the members of the forum think about the policies....

I think allowing links to those with a set post count would be a good idea. Supporting members should automatically get to post links. This way active members who are contributing to the site with posts (an ad based website makes no money without data/posts) and supporting members who make donations, reap a reward.

Yeah, cause I actually haven't really been here.

I stop by every day... read 1 or 2 threads and disappear again. My full time job has effectively made it so that I have to choose between editing and TPF when I get home... guess which wins out?

There will always be new members and new posts. All that will change is that anyone who is serious about photography will just go somewhere else.
This forum will just be the blind leading the blind. Even in the time that I've been here, I can already see it going that direction...

Basically, anybody that knows what they're talking about gets driven away, and all that's left is people asking which camera they should buy...

That's my point. It's spam. That person only posts to post that link to drive traffic to a site loaded with ads. I've reported it repeatedly. It just doesnt make sense that links aren't allowed in sigs, but this activity is OK.

Depending on the content of the data available in this forum, there will be less ad revenue. How many people will come back day after day if it's always the same "Which brand is better?" dribble regurgitated over and over? There will be a high turn over of members, yes, but people will reach 3 to 300 posts and move on. Other forums will grow and/or spring into existence and they will cater to the valued members that were driven away from this forum.. That forum will thrive and will be the forum making more ad revenue. Such is the way of forums..
