The bridge is not very interesting in any of the photos. The last 3 are out of focus; I'm not sure what you were going for on the 3rd photo. The comp is bad on all the photos and the 1st and 2nd horizons aren't straight - leaning to the right.

ah, thank you! They were my first photos taken w/ an SLR and it was hard to obtain focus on the night portrait setting. I recently started taking pics so I appreciate the feedback! :)

yeah, I have not read the manual yet. I am going to start reading about photography in my spare time. Thanks for the book recommendation :)

I wanted to use my new camera and this bridge is beautiful to me, so I started snapping pics ;) It was literally my first time using a nice camera. I've always had really cheap cameras; I've always loved taking pictures of nature and scenery. Its a really cool footbridge over 8 railroad tracks in springfield, mo

1. I would say that it isn't a bad first try. But the best advice is use your camera on the manual setting, not portrait mode, not aperture priority, or any other mode. If you really want to learn about photography that is step one. Learn your apertures and shutter speeds and the relation between the two.

2. if these are the type of photos you like to take I would invest in a tripod. keep it with you always and make sure your photos have level horizons. It looks like image 3 was a moving train. If you were using a tripod that image would have nice straight motion streaks and be a much better shot. Right now it looks like you were out late drinking tons of coffee trying to take night shots with jittery hands. :)

3. Make sure you manual focus on the particular part of the image you want the viewer to look. (in image 4 your focus is very close. I would have focused on the bridge a little further down.

4. An SLR is a film camera. Did you shoot this on film and scan the images to digitize them? A DSLR is a digital camera, a digital slr
SLR = single lens reflex

5. Keep practicing. (on manual mode)

haha, I was up late drinking coffee, it is a DSLR ;), I didn't know how to work the thing, but I do know that it kept telling me I need a tripod. lol Thanks for the advice. I will keep practicing.
