C&C Little Girl In A Yellow Tree

It always helpful if you post your settings - shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

Very cute little girl

1. The hands look a little out of focus maybe due to motion blur or having too shallow of a depth of field. Wish there was a little more light in the eyes - they are a little dark. This may be a personal preference - but the leaves in the top corner are distracting. Everything else (leaves/tree) are blurred except for those leaves. My eyes keep going back to that corner. maybe darkening the background and leaves up a little bit will help. As is, the leaves are very bright whereas the little girl isn't.

2. Her hand on the tree is distorted, I think. It looks way too large to be her hand. You also can't see her arm so it looks like a disembodied hand on the tree. :) I know you can't really get a kid to do what you want but if she was looking off to the side just a bit more the shot would have been stronger.
I think it would look better with a tighter crop. It will get rid of the hand and follow the rule of thirds better.

The 2nd one also has some very bright spots in the background. Brightness draws the viewers eyes.

Hope this helps.

The pictures were shot with these setting's
1. Iso 100 f2.8 1/640th 50mm
2. Iso 100 f2.8 1/500 17mm

yeah I realized that my DOF was to sallow when I got home I need to pay more attention to detail. it was a cloudy day if I waited to get that sun peeking though the clouds would of been much better.

Your shutter speed is pretty high so you should definitely choose a smaller aperture. Shooting wide open like that (f2.8) isn't the best. It's easier to miss focus and most lenses don't perform their best at their widest opening. You can use a smaller aperture and still get the nice blurted background. The 2nd picture was shot at 17mm - that's probably why there was a little distortion.

I, sometimes get so wrapped up in what I'm doing that I forget to change a setting or I just don't pay attention.....Especially ISO. I'm notorious for forgetting to change my ISO!

exposure compensation is my achilles heel. Can't tell you how many times I pull out the camera after using it the day before, get all these either totally blown out, or completely dark shots, start to think the D3100 is on the fritz then remember "yeah, you wanted dark, saturated moody shots yesterday and you didn't change the EC back." At least with ISO, it doesn't really do as much unless you were using the real high end (or the low end is causing your shutter speed to be unacceptably low).
