I'm a n00b but I have a feeling that the pros will tell you that the subject should not be dead centered. In my humble opinion it gets lost in the background. It doesn't stand out enough.

I don't mind the empty space. It's actually filled with a variety of textures and focus levels. I prefer the larger image. However, I find the shadows distracting and the light a bit harsh and white. Did you use a flash here?

Nice vivid colours in this photo, and the flower is nicely in focus. I think it might be good to try the same shot but with the background blurred out more.

Flash have helped this shot because it would have filled the shadows and evened out the highlights.
