camera choice for jewelry

Hi all, In need of a dslr camera for jewelry photography for an online selling site called etsy. And or ebay . So as to give you an idea of my needs.
I don't have deep pockets or deep knowledge but do know i need manual features. Macro. And can learn about the settings. And there surely is a lot to learn. But knowing which camera to buy is overwhelming. The nikon, or canon lower end model. And which lens for the camera is needed for the jewelry photos. I was looking at the nikon d40 and the canon eos rebel xsl as an example for what i can afford. Would either one of those be acceptable for photographing jewerly. I have read that the nikon d40 doesn't have manual aperture adjustment which is needed as far as i know.
Please, Any advice, recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you.
