Hoping this post hasn't come too late....
I'd agree with the Pentax K1000 recommendation as well (it was also my student camera). However, i would say having used the Pentax extensively, i would suggest the Minolta srT102 first. Usual prices on the BIG electronic auction site for the srT102 are around $40 USD depending on what is included and condition. It is a fully manual camera with a battery-operated light meter and simply feels great in hand - confidence inspiring really.
The srT101 is also good as is the last srT version, the 202. However, the 102 has ALL the features of the 101, plus everything the 202 had as well. It was only produced for 2 years so there are usually fewer offerings, but imho well-worth looking for.
With the Minolta, the light meter is sooo incredibly easy to use it is almost like cheating! Great "textbook" type exposures are simple to achieve and more creative exposures become much easier to understand and work toward.
Also, Rokkor (Minolta's professional brand designation) lenses are cheap, easy to come by and excellent in all things a lens is supposed to do. Minolta Rokkor-X lens color rendition is superb and they provide very, very sharp images.
