You are probably going to need more than a thread.
Have you read any books in the vein of 'Understanding Exposure'?
To really get something out of using manual mode, you need to understand how exposure works...how shutter speed, aperture and ISO affect your exposure as well as the other affects they have on your photos.
But there's more.
You could simply put the camera into manual and adjust the settings until your 'needle' gets to zero (--0--)....this would give you the same exposure that the auto modes will give you. But, if you understand (at least somewhat) the topic of metering, then you will know that being on zero, really isn't the best option for many situations.
Using manual mode is one way to take control of your exposure and get away from making your exposures at zero on the camera's meter.
Of course, you don't have to be in manual mode for that, you can use auto modes and EC (exposure compensation).
Shooting in manual isn't a secret magic trick. A shot taken at say; ISO 100, 1/100 and F8...will be the same, no matter what exposure mode you are in. It's just a matter of how you arrive at your settings, for the shot that you are taking.
