$1 (1 of 1)-5.webpany c&c welcome... and thanks

HOnestly I'm not quite sure what I am appreciating.. Am I looking at the flowers, the branches or the River?

The dark doesn't bother me nearly as much as the apparent lack of a subject.

What were you trying to do with this photo? What did you intend for the eye to be drawn to? Because my eye just wanders all over it, and nothing about the subject or composition really appeals to me.

That may sound harsher than I intend, but I'm just being honest--the photo does nothing for me. Take that opinion for what's it worth, which is probably about half of what you paid for it. ;)

I was trying to focus on the shimmery water with the slow shutter... this was taken at about 11pm... oh well.... if I had to tell you guess I failed

I get it, and I don't think you failed, but definitely something to improve on. At first look the water stood out and left me wanting more of it. I feel the tree branches are too much and distracting.

Personally, I don't view my photos that "don't work" as failures (and I have a LOT of 'em!)--I view them as learning experiences. Every picture you take can help you learn and progress.

Now that I understand what you were going for, I can only tell what *I* might have done differently, but photography is an intensely personal pursuit, and my objectives may not match yours.
Primarily, I would have gotten closer to the water, so that the trees in the foreground aren't such a distraction. There also seems to be some sort of large metal wire going up, just about along the imaginary rule-of-thirds line on the right. I'd try to avoid having that in my final photo, as it takes away from the nature scene, imo.

I can't really tell, but it looks like maybe the creek/stream/body of water begins to curve at the upper left corner. If possible, I'd have tried to frame it so that curve played into my composition, maybe letting the stream run from the right bottom edge over to the left top edge and then just curve on out of the frame. Don't know if that makes sense; I can see it in my head, but explaining it is something else entirely. ;)

Keep shooting, Keep Learning!

Thank you.. great advice.. I can see that. I will play with this scene some more.

I think you suffer from the same thing I do, in dealing with landscapes and nature. I'm guessing that really looked cool in person. Let me know if I am right.

I find myself with pics that look great in person, but don't work in pics. Still working on it.

as the other stated...well..I won't echo them, but heed their words....they help me a lot here.

The trees distract from the focal point of the water. Instead of changing the lighting, perhaps change the subject so that the trees are used to frame the and highlight the water. The purple flowers on the left have some potential as well to add color, but the subject - water - needs to be a little easier to see.

Thank you.. I agree with all of you and appreciate your help
