Can you do anything with this?

A photographer friend of mine gave me the OK to post this picture.. its a photo near and dear to the bride from many many years ago. Apparently whoever photographed it had their camera serviced just prior and never did any test shots so they all look like this. I gave it a go and I'll post my results below as well. If anyone would like to give it a try let me know and I can email you the full scanned file.

Edit: A bit darker does give the impression of more detail, but not sure it's that much better:
