What's new

Can you feel the power?

A small something to think about, mishele. Get a camera raincoat if you like shooting seascapes and frequent places like these. although your camera doesnt get wet, the salty air and the dust could affect your camera after a while.

Bahhhh.......you just buy a new one.......lol :sexywink:

As I said, there is nothing that gives a sense of size of the waves. Photography plays tricks on the mind and experienced photogs know that. Therefore nothing here tells us how big those waves really are... You have to put something in the photo that gives us an idea. The last one you posted is much better in that sense.

As far as the conversions are concerned, there are huge chunks of blacks with no details whatsoever.

"Nothing here that tells us how big those waves really are..." ...you mean EXCEPT for our own visual experience with angle of view, focal length, and the real world...a simple glimpse of the horizon's position, and the clouds in the skyline and a person who has seen some ocean waves has an instant idea of the scale of the waves...cloud formations in relation to the horizon line, and the HUGE, simply HUGE preponderance of the waves in RELATION TO the horizon line and clouds gives us an instant idea of the size of the waves. So, sorry cloudywalker, but, uh, no, I have to call bull**** on the idea that there is nothing here that tells us how big those waves really are. For example, in photo #2: let me describe it for you cloudy...when a wave hitting a rocky shore sends water up higher than the inland portion of a rocky headland, you know, HIGHER than the portion of a headland that touches the clouds, then that is a "big, crashing wave." When a near-shore wave curls and breaks, and occupies just under one-half of the frame height, across the entire width of the frame, then that is a BIG crashing wave.

Have you ever seen the ocean cloudy??? You know, in person?

:lmao:Great set Mishele! and I like the waves too:lmao:

as you know I have a lot of respect for cloud, but I have to agree with Derrel on this one.
Thanks for visually taking me back to Hawaii,Love the Photos!

I appreciate all the comments. The debating is a bonus.: It's always nice to see different point of views!!
I do believe like cloud said that my shots could of been better. They are very underexposed so it does leave very little detail in the lava rocks.

I guess I'll just have to plan another trip to Hawaii for a re-shoot. :sexywink: I will be taking donation for the "Power of Waves Discovery Fund".

Mishele,as far as exposure,I think you are at the limit of a digital cam's dynamic range,no? your blacks may be blocked but the whites look spot-on....Tone-map? I would love to hear from someone who knows more than I.

Now back to Chris C....as an Artist/painter,he could paint the Landscape, and then add an element to tell us more information
..Like a Sea gull or something.where as A photographer records what is there at the time. Maybe we should think like a painter ...with PS we could add an additional element. No?I guess if Cloud comes back by here, maybe he can explain his thoughts?

You are quite right that a painter can add whatever is needed to convey the feeling that is sought but a photographer can wait for those elements (a seagull in the right spot maybe) to come into place. As I've said more than once, patience should be in every photog's bag. Which, by the way, is why I don't take any gear except a P&S when on vacation. Nobody else wants to wait around and I don't blame them.

As for Deary Derrel, he conveniently skips over half of what I said allowing him to say something stupid once more. And by the way, Deary, yes, I have seen the ocean. Actually, probably more of them then you have.

Cloud.....some of that is insanely true!!! Even though my husband and I are both into photography, planning our whole trip around getting a shot isn't realistic!!! If I could have a month there and could plan out where I wanted to be at a certain time, that would of made a world of difference to the photos I got. Some of the best photos I have seen from Hawaii are from people that live there.....lol They have all the time in the world to shoot the amazing shot.....=) I still had a ton of fun trying to catch the moments that I was there!!

Patience!!! That is the ultimate key to some amazing shots! lol Or you are just damn lucky!!!!

Luck can do it but you can't count on it. Patience is always available if you want it. Ask any NG photog how long they spend shooting a ten page article and you'll understand what I'm talking about. If you are trained at Wally World, like some, that is hard to get...

Nice shots Mish. Looks like it was a good trip.
