Can you see it?

When you are photographing something, do you see in your mind what it will look like after processing and all is done? Or do you snap away and decide later what would look best (cropping, B&W or color, etc)?

I voted for the second option (decent idea). I would like to say that I know exactly what it will look like, but I'm not there yet.

As far as cropping and that sort of thing - pretty much the only cropping I ever find myself doing is for differing print sizes. 8x10, 5x7, etc - any size not conforming to the 2:3 aspect ratio requires cropping.

The way I compose my shots usually doesn't leave a lot of room for cropping. I try to remember to leave room for an 8x10 crop whenever I'm shooting portraits, but sometimes I forget. I can usually make it work though.
If not, there's always 8x12. Frames are just harder to find in that size...

I know in my mind's eye what I see and want to get from a photo....sometimes I am sucessful but more often not. I find this to be my major dilema, how to get my ideas to print (or screen).

Depends on the situation and the photo - areas where I am more experienced I tend to have some idea what I am aiming for and what I'll get out of the photo - othertimes I've little idea what I'll get and even less what the true final outcome will appear like.

I think that the same is true of most photographers - experience is the only thing that truly gives you the ability to predict with a degree of accuracy. Without that you're shooting blind
