Can you tell me the basics of joining a stock photo agency?

I considered joining a stock photo agency back in the '80s but I was very reluctant to ship my original slides to someplace I didn't know. But now in the new age of digital photography I no longer have to worry.

Can anyone tell me what are the basics of joining a stock photo agency? Do you contact them and tell them that you would like to submit your photos for them? Any contracts to be signed? Do they require a least a certain minimum of initial photos for you to submit?

Does it cost anything to join?

You know if you can give me the basics.

Have you googled them? They do have rather extensive FAQ's that should tell you more than you need

You should have joined in the 80s when they was still money to be made in that business.

Thanks to DSLRs and everyone being a pro there is no more money there. I actually had to get myself a job recently.
