Hi, can anyone explain what i'm looking for when i want a lens for the above 40d? i ask because although i bought a "EF" 75-300mm lens it works up until you take the photo then comes back with error messge on screen.

As i am new to this i have no idea what to look for apart from "Canon Ef" dslr compatible now i have a lens which i must sell

please can anyone explain ;)

EF lenses should work with the camera - what is the full name of the lens and what company manufactured it? Further what is the exact error code that the 40D gives you

Hi its a sigms 75-300 macro error code says e1 contacts need cleaning ? as it does not recognise lens, mentoring oh yes please any help would be very much appreciated, i'm off to New Zealand next year for a month and would hat to come back with "snaps"

Was the lens new or old? (ie second hand)

Furthermore you can clean the contacts yourself - use a pencil with an eraser end to it and use the eraser to rub over the copper coloured contacts on the lenses mount (the part that mounts to the camera body). Do the same for the little copper contacts on the camera's lens mount as well.

Yes, you can easily clean the contacts yourself.

One possible problem, may be that the lens is fairly old, and was thus designed to work with old Canon film cameras. It may not be able to communicate with the camera the way it should. I do know that many people had their 'off-brand' lenses 're-chipped'...to update them. You could contact Sigma and ask them about that specific lens, but it may cost more than it's worth.

You can get a newer 70-300mm lens that should work fine...provided, of course, that this is your problem. It's also possible that you camera isn't working right.
