Canon 5d Mark III vs Nikon D800 which would you choose ?

Just a for general knowladge, I am not planing to buy any of these 2 cameras as they are way out of my budget but they are grail dream cameras so I would love to know if you could choose one of these 2 cameras which one would you like and why.

D800. I would like to try something new, and I hear the 36mp is a killer in cropping. And I already have Nikon lenses.

The Canon 5D MK III is #17. Canon's flagship 1Dx is #13.

I'm a newbie, I have no doubt this was asked and will be asked again but we all need to be patient with the new guys.
I was very active on the "Fountain Pen Network" (fountain pen forum) and for years I saw in many cases people ask same question again and again and again which I admit was a anoying sometimes but I knew these are legit question and I need to remember I was a Fountian Pen Newbie once and asked the same question myself.
So please be patient with me and my silly question as I am really very interested in the replies.

The problem with your question is two fold. First, here is the essence of your question:

You get the drift. It is all a matter of personal preference.

Finally, The question smacks of Troll as questions of this nature generally evoke a disagreement since it is a matter of personal preference.

A poorly written sales pitch? How long has it been advertised for sale?
At $2400 it sure isn't priced to move quickly, since that is only 15% off the price of a new D800 that has a 1 year warranty.
There is also the difference between the asking price, and the selling price.
Plus as time passes, a seller's asking price/selling price tends to spiral downward.

Once I find a brand I like, I'm loyal to a fault. I'm on my 8th Canon camera in 45 years (5D3 3 weeks ago), 8th Chrysler product in 40 years, and at least my 15th set of Goodyear tires...most recently mounted yesterday!

Go with the Canon. A little 'surprise' I got when I moved from an 18mp 60D to 23mp 5D3 was shooting RAW+LJPG went from 22-25 combined MB on the memory card to 35-40 combined MB.

Although the 35mp Nikon may be a desireable goal, the speed at which it will fill memory cards may be its biggest fault.

Just a personal experience. I owned Nikon D700 before upgrading to the new D800 when it first came out. Did not like how the photos turned out after 2 weeks. Finally decided to try Canon 5d mark iii purchased together with the 70-200 is II lens. I was very impressed with the camera and the outputs. I feel sometimes the sensor is only one of the many factors when choosing a new camera. After all, we are not taking photos every day in a lab environment. Let the real world be the judge. Functionality wise, I found Canon is much easier to use.

I've seen a lot of switch going from 5D2 to D700. After D800 and 5D3 came out, I saw a lot of switch from nikon to 5D3. I know 2 people personally who switched to Nikon came back to Canon again after 5D3. They both said they dont like how the nikon file look and hate the super large file size. You are better off getting the D600.
