I recently purchased an excellent condition used Canon 70-200 f2.8L from Adorama and while it works ok most of the time I find that when it is zoomed into 200 that I have problems with it trying to focus. It will click quickly back and forth a bunch before it finally will either find focus or I have to turn it down slightly from 200 for it to achieve focus. This happens regardless of lighting or contrast. Is this a known issue? Normal? Broken? Camera problem? I am using it on a Canon 50D My EF-S 17-85mm IS works fine on it. It also seems to be focusing softly in low light but that could just be me. I tried micro adjusting the focus, but it didn't help any. I reset the micro adjustment and deleted the old micro adjustment info, but still nothing different. Any Ideas? Thanks.

Are you shooting something close? You might be trying to shoot something that is too close. There is also a setting on the lens minimum focus distance you want. I dont have a problem trying to focus something far.

No, I have been working with it for the last week and have been having trouble from all distances. Laying in the dark in my bedroom right now though I just tried it and zero freaking problems at all. Tack sharp and quick focusing. Now if I focus it down to the closest it will focus to and then try to focus on something far away it will not even attempt to try and focus unless I kick it up just a tad. I don't want to have to send it back,, but I need a lens that is gonna work like it is supposed to. The lenses is a bit loose fitting in the camera. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Anybody? It is still hunting back and forth, just not always. this is very frustrating to me.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems with this. Have you tried Canon support?

Canon U.S.A. : Consumer & Home Office : EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM

Don't forget that you have a 90-day warranty which includes a 30-day returns period. If you need to send it back, please drop me an email: HelenO@adorama.com

Does camera angle have anything to do with it? Like say it hunts when held parallel to the ground. But will work fine if held vertical (shots of the sky)? It could be a pin contact problem???

Helen, I just sent you an email. Thanks. I may just return it and pay extra for a new one.

It doesn't matter how it is held, it does it in any position. My other lense does not do this at all. It is quick and sharp. Most of the photos with the 70-200 are soft too, and I have tried to calibrate the micro adjustment with my camera and it still has issues. I cleaned the contacts with an eraser as well and it still has issues. The zoom on it sounds and feels a bit rough too, but I am sure that is not the issue, just a minor annoyance. The camera is brn new too... well it is a demo model from Adorama, but is was in bran new condition in the wrapper in the box. It is really frustrating, but I am sure that I can get it taken care of by Adorama.
