This is true in general. However, the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS is so sharp that it is even sharper than the f/2.8 version (not sure about the new mkII IS f/2.8 version) at f/4 (wide open), f/5.6 and f/8 on 70mm, 135mm and 200mm focal length. (Based on the MTF charts)

The 2.8 IS II is probably Canon's sharpest zoom. It is just ridiculous at all apertures and focal lengths.
The 2.8 IS II wins. I bit the bullet and ordered it this morning. Thanks for all the good advice.
