Canon EF 70-300mm IS USM Has The Dreaded Error 01 - Any Ideas?

Well,
Took a gamble on a used Canon EF 70-300mm IS USM lens and it has the error 01 issue. Tried it on 2 different Canon cameras, but no change. Tried cleaning the contacts and that didn't work. Also tried turning the lens a fraction from the locked position but that only allowed me to manually focus. Anybody have other ideas? It's a shame, the lens looks like new. Hope someone might have a solution.
