Canon or nikon

i am looking to buy my first dslr and i really like the canon rebel xti and nikon d60 but i dont know which is better.

The best one is the one you buy. Both are fine and if you like the Canon name or the way it fits your hand, that's just as good as buying Nikon for the same reasons.

I shoot Canon, because I started with Canon over 40 years ago. I'm sure my friends who shoot Nikon have made more decisions in that time based on brand loyalty or identity than anything else. I chose Canon because of their lenses.

Each will have features or attractiveness that make it better for you personally, so no one can say that one is much "better" than the other. It's mostly subjective and personal in the end.

The D60 is kinda meh.
The D40 is less great than the EDIT: D60.

The lack of an AF motor is VERY annoying. Ask my mom who brought her D60 this weekend, but forgot all of her lenses except the one on the camera. I literally have 10 lenses, and she can't use ANY of them except my Sigma 10-20.

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE... who is looking into Nikons should buy no LESS than a D80/D90. The ONLY reason for buying less is because you literally cannot afford it.

As I always say, there's nothing "wrong" with the lesser bodies... they will work, but they have significant omissions in functionality that WILL limit and frustrate you in time. My mom's example is a beautiful one.

they both have great begginer camera so pick them up and see which one feels better in the hands

The poster already chose Canon. But, for anyone else that is in the same pre-market mode, you should do the following:

(A) As many said, just go to your local camera shop and play with each model ... chose whichever feels best.

(B) Price the add-ons you may buy now or in the future ... Which one is more affordable (if money is a factor).

(C) Go to respected review sites like www.steves-digicams.com and research your models.

(D) if all else fails, flip a coin.
