As someone who started out shooting Canon for years, then switched to Nikon and so on, I can tell you that both systems are great. Everytime this kind of question is asked, it is an invitation for a war from brand loyalists and such, but I totally understand (having been in those shoes) how for a newbie trying to enter the SLR world, it is a totally genuine question one itches to ask because you just want that tie breaker to help you make a decision of what camera to purchase.

Here is some advice - don't look at the cameras only for features. Camera bodies come and go. so look into the lens system you want to invest into. This can be a little hard without having an idea how you will grow and what kind of photography you will get into. Nikon lenses are more often than not just slightly more expensive than their canon counterparts - although this is not ALWAYS the case.

As far as features - what features do you like about one camera that the other doesn't have and vice versa? Also, is this a feature that you truly NEED? Some features end up being really irrelevant to how you shoot and the type of photographs you take.
Maybe if you start to try to nail out what it is you want out of your camera (what kind of photos you want to take) it will help with deciding which of the two to get, but truly both these blow away by miles anything that existed years ago and is likely to already be the perfect camera for you.

Try playing with both in your hands to see which you like the feel of more. More than likely one will "speak" to you as being the one for you.
