In your opinion, when do you Canon will release their next camera under $1000. I've been looking at the 60D, but all the hating on its older tech makes me really wanna wait. I have till next summer (when I save up enough). Im staying near 1 grand... As I am 16 so money is tight and I have many others to spend. Also, to start off with.. I plan on selling my Rebel XS that I got last christmas for around 400 bucks- which will make up most of my spending money. Opinions? Suggestions? 2 cents?

Q u ought to ask your self is what EXACTLY do you need and want to do w/ your photography.
Maybe selling what you got and buying a used film camera might be a better way to go.

Keep the Rebel XS and WAIT for a new camera to actually be released.

Wait and see whats released.

Or take a look at stretching your budget and look at the 7D

But also think what you want to shoot, and what your looking for in the camera

You can make a lot more progress by increasing your knowledge and experience than by selling your camera to get a slightly 'better' one.
Get some books, take some classes. Buy a tripod, maybe a flash or new lens.

I agree with the others and keep the XS until you have the replacement in hand. The 10D thru 60D line is refreshed quite frequently (compared to some others).

Where is the XS currently limiting you right now? Need to come up with a list of issues you are running into. Like your doing alot of low light and need better low light performance. Or maybe you found you like fast action and the limit on frames per sec is slowing you down. Making alot of big prints, need more resolution? You need to make an honnest list of what you need! More than just, I want the newest / greatest. List what the XS is failing at often.

I just gave my Nikon D50 to a sister in law and I really didn't want to do it. It's way outdated compared to new bodies, which I have several of. But the camera performed so well. I just didn't want to let it go. Yes, it had short commings compared to the newer stuff. But it was very good at what it was good for!

So don't short change your XS so fast. Find out what you need, and then get a body that covers those needs.

Agreed. I currently use an XS and I see no reason to upgrade right now. I think I'll use it until I have money to spend on a much better upgrade (like the 7D), or until I break it from use :)

And of course, there is still much to learn.

Agree with other's is first determining Need vs. Want.

And not mentioned yet is how is your glass? I see way too many going from body+kit lens to next model up body+kit lens. Totally ignoring glass for the most part. I found stepping up the glass breathes new life into the camera I have. I replaced my 18-55 kit lens with the tamron 17-50 f2.8. And my usability in lower light & indoors and my Image IQ took a leap up.
.

Now that I thin about it... Maybe I'll save for some newer lenses. I have my kit and a 55-250. I want to replace my kit lense and am looking into a macro. Any ideas? Around $200 would be good... I'd take a higher quality standard zoom than a higher Q macro.

Although this is my first post on this forum, I am an oldtimer in photograhy. About 25 years or so....

I have a question for the OP.

What is spurring you for the upgrade? What is it, that you are trying to do, that the XS will not do for you, that you think the 60D or whatever else will.

One of the things you will learn is that it is generally not the equipment, but the USER that determines the outcome.

Granted if you are going to be making 30'x40' billboard photos, you may want more than a 10M sensor. But I bet the very best thing you can do is use your XS. Shoot everything you can and gain all of the experience you can. I bet it will be years before you "outgrow" that camera.

Spend your money wisely; Glass is a good choice along with other accessories.

Get out and enjoy it and learn everything you can.

Better ISO performance, something I can really grow into, my XS has slow burst rate for skiing and the noise is killing me.
