So we went to take some pictures out in the cold with my new Nikon d50 in A mode. These are the best of a bunch of 70.
First is feeding the ducks. Second is just on a bike trail.

#1 Handheld with Nikon 35mm 1.8 wide open

#2 70-210mm @210 f5.6 on tripod (not too sharp - why)

#3 70-210 @210 (sharper but was standing still and watching her sister)

grrrr ... why can't anything just work right the first time.

fixed images. stoopid flicker.

It looks like you missed the focus on the second one. With an aperture of 1.8 you have a really small DOF; it just takes practice to get it right. =)

It also looks like the first two are a tad underexposed.

The third one looks correct, technically, but I think if you used a portrait orientation it would have looked better compositionally.

JMO :)

Each of your subjects is centered. You may want to consider composition differently so as to draw viewers in to the photo.

The duck made my day :)

Choose a bigger number for the aperture settings and you should have sharper photos...

Metering in snow can be tricky. Try an exposure compensation of +1 when there is snow and you are not using a grey card or some other method of metering. The last shot is adorable. Here is a tweak to compensate for sharpness and under exposure.

thanks for all the comment. yeah the duck is centered but i was holding bread in one hand and trying to get duck in shot with the other. :lmao:

I honestly dont know how live event photogs do it ... my plan was to get the kids in portrait on the trail walking because the vert lines would of looked cool. get to the site and i completely forgot to turn the camera for portraits. :grumpy:

for number 2 would you get sublect in focus center, recompose off center, shoot?

thanks for the edit looks great, that is my fav too.
