Just wanted to share my excitement. Santa sent me my gift early this year (ok KmH, not Santa... anyway!)

I'm finally partially putting the digiscopy aside and starting wildlife photography with a lens properly speaking! These are quick pictures taken of my new toy. A Sigma 150-500mm DG APO HSM OS for Nikon. On my Nikon D90 it will give me a pretty awesome focal length of 750mm! Can't wait to give it a try!!

Tons of little birds and critters pictures coming up!!:D

ah, lenses in the category of having their own tripod mount.

tracking at 750mm while a bird is moving? that's hard

It will be, but it's better having difficulty to track a bird at 750mm than track it with my previous 200mm lens where the bird is as big as a dime on the picture! I'm sure with practice it's achievable! :D

Too bad I still have to work before Christmas... Starting next weekend, I'm going on the hunt for 3 weeks armed with my new toy!!

Sounds like a lot of fun. The lens will have a learning curve with it, which is usually a lot easier when one is as excited as you sound.

Try shooting animals/birds at rest and then move on to the moving critters.

Looking forward to the results.
BTW:
Merry Christmas!

Very nice! Good thing it as the tripod for the lens itself. I know after wedding season this year, even holding my two bodies and lenses made my tendonitis in my wrists act up. Wouldn't even want to imagine how heavy that beast is!

Thanks pbelarge! I'll follow your suggestion. Next weekend I'm heading in my parents house for Christmas break. They have tons of bird feeders. I'll start there with the little guys resting on the feeders. 1st results should be posted around Christmas ish...:D

Merry Christmas to you also:mrgreen:

It is a tank, but I'll try to minimize handheld shots. I can rotate the foot to make a nice grip where my hand fits perfectly and have a good access to the switches and rings. I'm planning on shooting mostly from monopod while hiking and tripod on deliberate short distance shoots. That big boy is rated at 1950g on Sigma's website. With my body, I'm looking at around 2.5kg. Next step is a grip to balance a little more the body with the lens. I'll be looking at a 3kg setup probably! Good times!!:lmao:
