Christmas tree - beams of light

Has anybody ever tried this?? I gave it a go, but I don't think I have enough lights on my tree for it to look cool. lol And my hands are a little shaky - really need a tripod for this! Anyway, these were just my attempts to see if I could even get this technique to work. Couldn't get where I really needed to be for this (would've had to be right in front of my husband's big screen lol), but maybe I'll give it another shot tomorrow.

I have a itty bitty Charlie brown tree. 4' fake tree so my cat doesn't destroy my house like she did last Xmas!

I yelled at my husband after I was done - I told him when he was putting the lights on the tree that he wasn't putting enough! lol Plus, I really wish I would've had multi-colored lights on the tree for this. lol

Even though I just did this for fun, it did teach me something new - I learned where in the menu to change the flash to rear curtain sync. =)

I was wondering how your picture came out clear since you werent using a tripod. It all makes sense now!
I didn't use flash for mine. Do you have a tripod? I did a 30 second exposure, I think. It might have been shorter/longer. My house was pretty dark at the time. Another thing that looks pretty is a long exposure (or maybe flash) at f/14. The Xmas lights look like twinkly stars.
