Color problem - Photo of a friend's child

This is completely unedited.

Issue: I had mentioned to the mom I would be using blue paper to match the baby's eyes. WHen they arrived here, the dress was a tan/greenish combination. I have white paper, as well, but I had not set up with it and I was hesitant to drag it out because of the beige in the edging.

Question: What can I do to optimize this color-wise and otherwise? I am an amateur photographer just trying out studio style photos, but do know photoshop (CS5).

Not sure what you mean by "optimize", what is it that you want to do exactly?

That green is pretty ugly. Silly moms.

...have mom wipe babys nose next time, lol.

also, image size is way too small to get in close and see things.

and lighting does not seem that great. lots of shadows, some harsh, and well...this may just be my opinion, but in that shot I would not want shadows at all on background and floor.

Hi Lizzz - welcome! So, I just did a really quick color replace (did not get all the blue out, but I think you can get the idea).

When you're shooting in a studio environment, there's no reason not to already know before you push the shutter button what the color temperature of your lighting is.

baby looked a bit green to me (backdrop too), so I fixed that by pulling out green a bit on the mid tones, and I edited out some shadows I didn't like, and I replaced mom with an ice cream cone.

Nice, I need to learn how to do that color replace thing. Now pull that green tint out of the mid tones on that baby in your edit. tsk tsk.

You spent all that time on the ice cream cone and did not bother to fix the runny nose??? Ermie!

Your craptop is not failing you. . . when I adjusted her skin tones, my background also tipped towards the lavender scale.

Ya know, I did pull the green out, but my color replace put it back in. . . the correct way to color replace (IMO) is to painstakingly select only the areas you want to convert (so you don't pull out skin tone colors). . . but I'm lazy tonight, and it's not my photo

well it's not lazy, when image is so small we have to pixel peep and that takes all the fun out of a quick fun edit

Here's my little contribution. I basically selected the dress and amped up the saturation and contrast, then added red to the skin, and finally toned down the saturation on the background. Maybe the green is a bit too poppy, but you get the jist. Finally, just a little manipulation with the color curves to fine tune it.

I apologize for the small size!!!! It was my first post here on the forum. About studio lights -- I am an amateur with a capital "A" and all along with my photos (including non-studio ones) I make up bad photography techniques with photoshop fixes. All of those shadows would disappear after I am done with it..... It's just that I wanted to see how the pros here would attempt a fix. I do like the ice cream cone! LOL. I'll post my version as soon as I find a tissue to fix the runny nose!
