Colorful Straws

Not bad. The shadow in the foreground hurts it, as do the out-of-focus straws in the foreground. If you're basically filling the frame with the subject matter, then you should go all the way and eliminate everything else, either by cropping or changing the point of view. The black background and the yellow straws sticking up don't help the image, as you will see if you cover them up. When you find an interesting subject like this, take several shots and vary your angle and perhaps the lighting as well. Of course you're doing this with a tripod so you can use a small aperture (like f16) and get good depth of field - right?

Thank you for the tips! I was using the a tripod but I had in macro mode and I let it adjust everything itself and I liked the results. I am starting to use CHDK on my powershot so I can have more control over aperture and such so I will play around with varying angles and different apertures and see what I get. Thank you

A crop can make a difference...

I didn't think this photo would be one that worth cropping until I saw your edit of it. That looks pretty cool!

Of course I'd have to think of something to put besides your words but amazing still. What made you think of cropping the image?

I like the pic but I do have to say that I like the cropped version better. :D

Jonathon,

Like you I am also learning how to use a camera technically, but you have to be creative.
Not all the shots you take are picture perfect but with some creativity you can still get the best out of it.

I didn't think I had many options for creativity with my $80 point and shoot camera but I guess you proved me wrong :P

You have lots of options. Every camera has limitations, regardless of cost. Our challenge is to discover those and a way to work around them (unless you have unlimited funds or a huge budget).

I would suggest you not worry about the camera type and start practicing to determine what can be done with a point and shoot.

Just as your other photo showed an interest in random throw away thoughts, this one continues with that processes. Build on what interest you. Finding the option that best reveals that vision and tighten your composition.

I've been practicing and working with everything I've seen. I just realized yesterday how to use the macro mode efficiently. Oddly it's been one of those feature I didn't really pay much attention to even though I should have.
