I cut a branch off our last cherry tree.

Beautiful patterns, I read that we can deduce the age of the tree from the number of rings the log has.

Correct, each ring represents a years growth. The width of the ring indicates whether it was a good growth year or not.
 
Ron's right. I find it interesting how the rings "sag" to the bottom.

I was just looking at it as concentric circles, never knew the width of the ring had significance too.
 
True, we can find out the age of the tree aswell the climatic condition it underwent by the colour of the rings as Ron said
 
I see an image w/out any outside reference, maybe a square format ... in B&W (maybe even a high contrast image).
