Comfort from Daddy

I think your flogging a dead horse, bin it for me it just looks too snap shot, if you have turned it B+W the color version must be bad

Are you serious? Did you see MissCream's edit? I think this is a very nice picture. It might stand to use a little tighter crop, but the life behind the eyes of the baby is very well captured.

Yes im totally serious

At the risk of making a complete idiot of myself... may I ask why?

Aren't there lots of reasons someone might choose to convert from color to B+W?

If the original version is "too snapshot" what could the OP have done differently? I understand the points folks are making about the underexposure and the need to recompose for a tighter shot/focal point but what are the other possibilities for improving the original in camera?

I ask not to start anything but to genuinely understand how not to make the same mistakes myself. I read the C&Cs to learn how other photographers think and to better understand the process and techniques. I find it helpful when members' comments are specific... even if the reasons for a particular statement are purely personal preference; ie: "I dislike shots of kids and babies." (not true for me btw... just an example ;) )

Now that I've decided to come out and play on the forum once in awhile I figured I'd start asking these questions that have been burning in my head. I'm working my way up to posting my own pictures after all and this is like dipping your toes when you aren't quite ready for the full plunge.

I don't think that's really fair comment; yes, I suspect the original had some exposure issues, but a flawed original is NOT the only reason to do a mono conversion.

most people one here go gooey eyed as soon as they see a baby photo posted and can't even think about deleting it, the only redeeming features in the photo are the babies eyes and they don't look 100% in focus, look at the rolls on the fathers neck blown out shirt, the tilted background, the trees blending into the fathers head, and it looks like they were in total shade very flat looking

Rolls in the dads neck? Are you serious? Wow you are really reaching there. I agree that the lighting is flat and its not a good bw conversion, but it doesn't need to be "trashed". (did you see Miss Creams edit?)
Anyway not every-single-photo has to be a magnificent work of art, free of flaws.. and neck rolls. :er: (you know that does happen to everyone when they turn their neck...)
Do you understand that there is more meaning behind a photo than getting everything compositionally right? Being a photographer you are supposed to be able capture special moments, like a tender moment btw a dad and baby. Yeah it would be better if the composition were better and things, but to dump it?

Yes i have seen misscreams edit and still don't like it, yes i would delete it but then i would not have taken it, and yes everything should be right because it sounds like she was shooting it for a customer

First, the OP asked our thoughts. Second, composition and "things" should be on point, particularly if you're shooting for a client. Personally, I'd like to see the original. I don't think the B&W works for this photo.
