I like the idea but it's under exposed

I think the exposure is fine. Just not a fan of the B&W conversion. Plus I think you need to go much tighter. Just show her and crop just on the top of dad's eye.

Well, I would still keep the 3:2 ratio. Just work on your B&W conversion. Google it. I am still not happy with my B&W conversion either.

Here is a b&w edit I did in LR3, I don't know anything about elements sorry
In LR3 I always use the preset B&W's then adjust them to what I really want
Sorry for the big picture, and looking at it I would probably decrease the blacks a bit.

The subject matter is nice, and even better in the more tightly cropped version, but the image is under-exposed and lacking contrast. This contributes to the muddy, grey monochrome conversion which almost all mid-tones and not real blacks or whites.

BW conversion isn't good. It looks grey not black and white. Also crop out some of his back because theres too much back in the shot

His shirt is distracting to me. Everytime I look at it, I look at his shirt first.

I think your flogging a dead horse, bin it for me it just looks too snap shot, if you have turned it B+W the color version must be bad
