I think the background is a little distracting and I am wondering if I should cut him out and put another background behind him?

I'd leave it alone, it's a candid and the environment is what it is

O like the first photo just as is. Manipulating the BG for what point? I think its actually a great BG. The kind of background you would put in this kind of photo...
Crop loses the arm paint and is perhaps to tight to feel natural. Of youbwant uncomfortable, take away negative space.

The background is not terrible, so unless you're Scott Kelby, don't try to change the background. The easier edit is to just darken it a bit and that might help. Don't make your edit spoil the shot. I like his upper torso included as in your original version.

Not knocking you, or anyone else as Id probably do it too ( take photos of people, monks etc while vacationing)..... I see photos like this often enough to make it seem a common place thing to do.

..... but I always wonder when I see Touristy, Ethnicy Religiousy photos what it would be like if some Indian people ( or Chinese or Siberian or Ninjas or whatever) decided it was cool to vacation in my town ( never going to happen so not worried) and walk around my Church and take photos and maybe they threw some change at us if that would be awesome or not. Probably awesome right! I'll take their money and I won't smile either.

Then they could fly back to Siberia, post my face all over their Siberian internets and squabble over the BG detail. At least they will have paid.

More the Monk children posts I am referring to but this is similar.

I like the background, I think you should leave it. My comment would be that the contrast is a bit too intense for my personal liking.

Actually, we DO get this in England. In my city of Lincoln we have a 900 year old cathedral with Anglican (that's Episcopalian to the Americans) priests and such who wear funny dresses. We have Asian (and many other) tourists wandering all over the ancient pile, happily snapping, paying the steep entry fee and spending silly money in the cathedral gift shop. They help pay the bills (£3.8 million per annum) that keep the place from falling down.

Get this a lot in Scotland too, especially if you are wearing a kilt. I've even had randoms take photos of my pug.
