Common Gallinule

We managed to get out this morning before the rain and find the Gallinule again with better light.

Looks like a cross between our Moorhen and Coot. Nice looking specimen.

Looks like a cross between our Moorhen and Coot. Nice looking specimen.

It doesn't look like it's fully developed yet, it doesn't seem to have a complete red shield yet like most adults I've seen and I'm pretty sure gallinules and moorhens are the same bird. Coots are related to both but different.

This one had a full red shield in July but has since lightened to what you see now.

I guess I made the classic mistake of assuming something. I would have to read up on that to understand why it happens.

I'm not sure why it's happening but it's likely due to the time of year or a diet change.
