Complete and total beginner in photography trying to get into DSLR world

Hi

I'm new here. And like most normal people, I've taken a few pictures and slowly started getting into photography. But, I'm looking to buy a new camera and I have no idea where to start. I am seeing some that are actually around $5000. I didn't know some cameras could go for that high. Anyways my birthday is coming up and I don't mind starting out with an old model. I'm just starting out and I'm not really good so I need an entry way into the DSLR life. And, my birthday is coming up so I thought I'd buy it for myself. I am thinking of picking up the canon 30d or 40d? what do you recommend. I'm getting it used on ebay. And any photographer tips for me?

I'll tell you a good camera that could serve you very well..

Minolta Dynax 7D (ebay about $250-300) and find a Minolta 3.5-4.5/35-70 lens (about $50-60).
Excellent DSLR and that cheap lens is awesome.

Minolta ? seriously guys ?

Me, personally I'm planning on buying a Canon 7D and a 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II USM lens. Not sure about what to buy look for reviews on YouTube. But since you have $5 000 you can all the way and buy a 5D Mark II and 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II USM but this lens it's meant for portraits, more or less.

What do you need a camera for? What are you planning on shooting ?
