What is the best way for me to calibrate my monitor so that i make sure i am getting true colors and brightness

X Rite Color Munki. Very easy to use, reasonably priced and once adjusted the colors are spot on to the profiles for my Epson printers.

Many editing professionals and online print labs recommend X-Rite's computer display calibration devices and software.

To calibrate a computer display a colorimeter will suffice:

If maintaining color accuracy post process is critical for you:
X-Rite ColorMunki Display and ColorChecker Passport Bundle (Black)

If you also want to calibrate/profile a variety of devices - display, printer, scanner, or projector you will need a spectrophotometer:
