just a suggestion, but try making this black and white. it would look more authentic and appropriate for a civil-war era topic/subject

Why cut him off at the knee? You have all that dead space up top, his head is dead center....you coulda had a really nice image if you backed up or zoomed out a little and captured the whole guy. I probably would have stepped to the left a little to get rid of the tree trunk in the background.

Try sepia, but I think the colors are very nice in this image.

I found the composition to suit the image well at the time. I intentionally left space at the top because it was fall season and I wanted to show off the fall colors in the background. Thank you!
