Pretty much evey camera on the market at the moment, ranging from $100 Point-and-shoot, to $20,000 combos of professional gear, will allow you to do what you want. It depends on your expectations - if all you'll do is post on facebook, or the internet, then you don't need a high-megapickle contraption. If you shoot only under bright conditions, then high-ISO performance, bright lenses, and various lighting gear is not needed. On the other hand, the deeper you venture into the boundaries (low light, fast action, ultra close or very far), the better gear you will need to come away with good exposures. Also consider whether you are going to be shooting snapshots for the family album or whether you are trying to fulfil a secret desire to be in the Guggenheim - the artistic vision (which is camera-independent) will figure strongly in whether anyone outside your immediate family will want to see the images. Making interesting images that go beyond the time-and-place record, is something that requires effort, some talent, and an ability to "see".
To answer your original question: sure, a D7000 will work well. And so will a number of other camera models. Go to a store and handle them - some cameras will feel more "right" than others. Once you start, you'll probably find that your needs will evolve, and you'll have a better idea of what's right for YOU.
