Conquering the streets

In colonial times, when the foot soldiers carried muskets, all the important guys carried swords; things are different now.

TBH, that doesn't mean squat to me.
They have chosen their tools and how much they are willing to spend.

That doesn't make a Leica shooter inherently better, only richer.

I'm just saying it is one of the best tools for shooting on the street, film is not expensive

Hamlet, if you set it on "P" mode than that should be just fine. This allows you to select your ISO and the camera will correctly adjust the shutter and aperture for setting. This gives me no problems with exposures. As for people knowing that you're about to take their photo, than you should first think if their photo is worth being taken to begin with.

But aren't Leicas like magic or something and endow the shooter with instant godlike talent to take the best photos the world has ever seen?

Well thank you. Since the time i created this thread, i've come a long way because now i don't even care any more if they notice me. All i needed was a little practice in M mode.

I take photos in Oaxaca, Mexico. One winter visitor uses a long lens and hides in bushes and I find that creepy and rather offensive. If I'm taking a photo of one or two people I ask permission, often by holding the camera up, smiling, and getting a nod. I find with digital if I take some photos people go back to doing whatever they were doing an forget about me. Sometimes I live the photos of eyes on the camera, especially with kids.

I'm not in the U.S. People here are usually polite and permit photos. If they don't want photos taken I smile and thank them and move on. Later, on another day, the same person might not have a problem. We get a lot of seriously rude tourists who foul the nest.

If it's a group or just a street scene I just shoot.

Its always nice to be nice. But i make it a general rule of thumb not to keep any pictures where my subjects were aware of me taking their picture. I generally acquire my focus by targeting something else that is the same distance and disarm my targets by pretending to take a picture of buildings just slightly away from them, just enough for them to notice that i'm not pointing towards them. They generally don't even pay attention to me, but if they do they will see that i'm not pointing towards them.

I dont get this, what does it matter if they notice you it can add to the photo

Its just my preference. If the way you do it works for you, then that is also great.
