Converting slides into digital

We have quite a lot of B&W slides from family holidays (Agfa Scala mostly!). How do we bring these into the digital age so we can view them on our computer? Can desktop scanners handle these?

There are inexpensive ($85 to $100) slide copiers available. Stand alone units that plug into the PC by USB, take the slide and copy it and then is saved to the PC. The best thing Ive seen is a slide copier that is like a filter that screws on the front of your lens. You just point it at a light source (an overcast day is perfect) and shoot a copy of the slide. Its fast and gives a pretty good copy.

After copying slides to digital, you may find that the quality of the slides was not as good as you remembered it, or thought it was.
