When I do list something, I list a price, followed by "And let's be serious here, folks.... if I wanted $90 for it, I'd have listed it for $90......"

I had listed two lenses (50 1.4 and 70-300) on Craigslist for sale. I used CL so that I wouldn't have to go through the eBay issues.
A couple of days after the posts, I started getting incredible low-ball offers.
Like $50 for the 50 1.4.

Some so incredibly low that, like the Nigerian scams, I wonder if they really think that anyone would accept them.

I'm sure most are intentionally low balling you but some could simply be new to the hobby and feel you're over charging for the lens. This is my first experience with buying individual lenses and I have found it confusing at first. You can have 2-3 lenses with the same numbers but range in prices by $100's of dollars if not more. This is where one needs to understand acronyms like VR, ED, and IF for example. The same thing with light and speed, F/2.8 vs F/4.5 etc. Anyhow, that is just my thought on the subject. I personally avoid listing items on CL as much as humanly possible. Instead, I try to find a related forum or local forum with a garage sale sub-forum....that or deal with eBay.

Some offers will come from those who know how to find completed ebay listings. They're search ebay for the gear listed on CL, and find 15 completed sales, anywhere from $50 to $100. They then adopt the attitude that if one has sold on ebay for $50, they should make an offer for that to the CL seller.

I get scams all the time. So much so that I am starting to avoid CL and just suck it up and pay the eBay fees...*grumble grumble*

One particular funny story though...

I put my roommate's old truck on CL for him. He was asking $1000 and some guy came in at $550. Granted, it was an older truck but it ran great and had a bunch of new parts. So I politely told the guy that that price would not cut it and he came back saying $650 was his "final offer" and when I declined that as well, he proceeded to start an argument with me about how the truck "wasn't worth a cent over $650 and I was insane for asking such a high price." I told him that much work had been done to it and many parts had been replaced recently, including a new $300 fuel pump. Then he argued with me about the price paid for the fuel pump. I was half tempted to send him the receipt for the part...In the end I finally said "If you can't pay my asking price please cease communications and if you continue to harass me you will be reported to the proper authorities" No response after that....

And sometimes I read the personal ads for kicks and laughs
