crap.. help

so the camera is the thing with the problem? it almost sounds like a lens issue. Thats what happens when you use a non-compatable lens on the d40, but since you were using your kit lens, it shouldnt have happened. You should see if you can find another kit lens to try out to make sure your lens didnt just die...

tried the lens with another d40, works fine.
tried the body with another lens, the problem is still there.

Sorry to hear you have a faulty camera. It's always frustrating, and undermines your confidence in your gear.

Try to find somewhere in the manual where you can reset everything to the factory settings. My initial thought is that it might be set to bracket (can it do that on auto?). If there is mechanical failure your shutter is probably stuck open OR your mirror is stuck up (which is unlikely because you wouldn't see through the viewfinder then).

Call customer support if you can't find what is wrong.

Peanuts, I don't think it can be bracketing as the D40 as far as i'm aware doesn't have an AEB function.

[EDIT] I just noticed that the issue is kind of resolved [/EDIT]

hopefully Nikon's manufacturer's warranty is pleasant to deal with...
