Hey Dominic! Welcome to TPF, and all the Zany characters we have here! It is fun, but can be confusing at times too... and sometime we even have DRAMA!!

Your pics do needs some work.. but we all started that way!

Make sure the focus is sharp on your subject! That is one of the most important things. The reason the truck in the first shot is out of focus is because it was shot at 1/12th of a second.. and was probably handheld. The low light and having the camera set to AUTO mode did this. It was at 800 ISO.. and probably needed to be higher.

Some of the other shots would be better if you shot them in vertical format... rather than landscape format. You will learn this as you get more experience!

Last pic (fireman) was shot at 1/4 of a second, ISO 400 at F5.. again, way to slow for handholding. You need a tripod or a steady brace on something for a shot like that.

Then I REALLY REALLY hope that you are of the FEMALE persuasion! If you aren't and I found you sexy... I would be extremely worried! lol!

(and since you are 16.. please don't over do it! Keep it sweet and tasteful!) A pretty smile is sexier than many other things, for instance!

Hey dominic! Welcome to the forum!
I used to be you about 6 months ago.
I too am 16 and love photography. I know that feeling of wanting to get a DSLR, I was after the D5100 too. Christmas came along and I got one! Having a new camera just encourages me to learn more and more about photography.

What I recommend is to read as much as you can about photography!
First learn the basics. Learn all the technical things before getting a DSLR. Also read up on composition!

After learning the basics, I recommend reading Scott Kelby's Digital photography book vol. 1 to learn some handy tips.
I just finished it and I love it! Lots of helpful tips.

I want to thank everyone who has commented on my pictures and those who gave me a lot of good information. I really appreciate it and it has given a really good start. I am still saving up for the DSLR, I actually drove to the local camera shop yesterday and received plenty of advice. I got to play with a Nikon D5100 (loved it!) and also a Canon Rebel T3i. I'm going to get some books and study them and learn more about photography. And manaheim, I cannot thank you enough. I really appreciate that.

If you keep practising, you might want to approach the local police force or fire brigade and see if they need an Official Photographer - I hear these positions are voluntary, but they do exist. with!

dominic welcome to the forum. what part of the country are you from?

you seem to like shooting police and fire scenes

as has been mentioned, your composition needs some work. and some of the pics are blurry or out of focus.

are you familiar with the rule of thirds or the exposure triangle?

It's reminiscent of an old poster who gave us a few laughs. Anyways, sorry to get your post off topic so I shall contribute something helpful to make up for it. Everyone is absolutely correct so far (except for that guy who told you "P is for Professional",lol) The important thing is to know the fundamentals such as exposure triangle and composition(ie rule of thirds and whatnot). I am still developing these two areas myself and while advanced cameras and lenses go a loooooong way in helping, if you don't think out your shot then they will just give you a really nice shot of blah. Also while viewing these forums pay attention to the difference between the "hey look at this cool whatever, I'm gonna take a picture of it" and the art of the photograph. A photograph should be well thought out and executed just like a good painting, sculpture or piece of music. If you need any help always feel free to ask, I'm no expert yet but I'm always glad to help!

Once in photography class we talked about the rule of thirds, but we have not talked about it since. I will study it, because I'm sure it will be really helpful for me.

Welcome to the forum Dominic.

First let me congratulate you on the excellent form of your first post in this thread. It is well written. You have used capitals where needed, punctuation and you separated your post into paragraphs.

Let me also congratulate you on your watermark. It is small and unobtrusive. If you insist on using a watermark then the one you came up with is not a bad choice. Move it to a bottom corner out of the way and it will be perfect. Don't worry about people stealing your images, a watermark won't stop that. Once an image is on the the web you might as well think of it as being public domain.

Finally, welcome to the engaging and rewarding hobby of that is photography. Hope you get your dslr soon and have loads of fun with it. However, as you have discovered, you don't need a dslr to do photography. Post images, read the comments and recommendations, try and learn from them and then post some more.
