What's new

D300 users....Tell us your exaltations and woes

So, I go myD300 bright and early yesterday. I love it but I haven't really gotten a chance to do any real world shooting with it yet. All the stories I've shot the last couple days for work have been sports(I don't have a lens fast enough for sports) and stories in place requiring fill flash(mine is in the shop).

You guys wouldn't happen to know if there's a plug-in to open 12/14 bit NEF in PS CS3 do you? I hate Capture NX.

probably just the latest version of camera raw.

Hot-damn! Got home today from where-ever it was I go, and the wife bought me a d300 for an anniversary present. Looks cool and this thread makes it sound good. I might buy the little woman a TS lens for it!

I'm stoked. I run in and look at it every few minutes. Then I run out and try to think of which crummy lens of mine I'm going to put on it.

I'm going to run with the sigma 10-20 for now. I've been plagued with sensor spots on my other two cameras so I'll be sending them in one at a time for cleaning. The little woman got me an 18-55 with the d300. The 18-55 I have now has some play in it about mid-focal length. Hm-- Hot dog, this is gonna be fun!!!

How does the auto-sensor cleaner do in the d300? Any slobs like me out there?

Haven't gotten to that point yet W. I'm just too fu¢Kin' lazy to be bothered to shake my sensor.

I am a complete "I'll try it out sometime" kinda fellow. Some people that are not quite aware of my work process/method/flow may think I am just plain lazy. hehehe Who knows, they could be right, but then again, they may not realize the methods of my madness. bwuhahahah.

Again, congrats. The biggest kick in the balls I got was the high ISO factor. 'Kin amazing.

So I'm finding out that not only am I an old dog, but I never had that many tricks to start with let alone learning new ones.

The high ISO doesn't do much for me so far- I like the low ISO for my junk. I see I can 'boost' the ISO down to 100 for those long, un-noisy, saturated photos I find sooooo romantic on an insanely hot desert evening. But I'm thinking I'm going to need one of them vari-nd filters.

Next is forcing a small aperture. The d70 and d80 go down to f32, but will stop at f22 or f27 quite a bit of the time. The manual sort-of mentions something about f36. Nothing clear hits me in the face though. That would be nice, but I have a feeling that it won't let me set it smaller that f27 or f32, which will be an improvement.

Since I like the long exposure thing, I need a remote trigger cable. I like the cable because I can tape/tie it to the tripod. I usually have too much crap in my pocket for a wireless anything and would lose it. But the ones I've seen at first glance look to cost $40. Sheesh.

Auto bracketing looks to be improved up to 9 exposures. I manually exposure bracket now for at least five exposures.

Speaking of focus, I'm looking forward to 'live view.' Ultimately I plan to have a tilt-shift lens on the thing, and possibly, this feature will help me produce what I lovingly refer to as Totally Integrated Technically Solved (T.I.T.S. if you like acronyms) images.

The thing I look to like is the increased image size. This will help me to see how screwed up I got the focus up close and to produce larger, blurry prints (Bigger T.I.T.S.).

Ok. I better go for now. ...

Not really sure what you are talking about here, since the minimum and maximum apertures are determined by your lens, not the camera... but I can tell you that the D300 will work just fine at F32 (I just tried it on my 105 VR which goes that high)...

Ummm, why would you want to shoot at f/32 or f/36 unless you were shooting macro when you need extreme depth of field...

You lose a TON of sharpness at those apertures due to defraction...

Dammit, reading this, I now want to upgrade too!!! However I decided to save hard and get a few more photo jobs and if lucky, by the end of the year I am upgrading to the Big Boy, D3!!!
