I have had my D5000 for about 4 years. I've really liked it and haven't ever (knock on wood) had an issue with it. I've been wanting a second body to have around so I don't have to swap lenses so often. My original thought was that I'd save up for a D7100 or better, but I was in a shop last week and was surprised that the D3300 beats my old D5000 in almost every category.

Would the D3300 be a worthy second camera to the D5000? I still have this stigma that my D5000 might still be the better camera, but with the specs on the D3300, I'm not so sure...

My D5000 also has a green pixel when you zoom in a bit on the LCD....I don't think this is a huge deal, but it got me thinking I need to grab a back up camera.

Apart from the flippy screen the d3300 should be better than your d5000. It should give a reasonable upgrade in image quality when light gets more difficult

Up to about 2 weeks ago my second body was a Nikon D5100, nice camera but I wanted something that will give me better low light performance and I got the D3300 instead.
I am being modest by saying if feels like I gained for at least 1/3 of a stop better low light performance which might not sound much but considering I have a brand new camera with more resolution and better low light and I only added 200$ for it to me feels like a bargain.

Now you have a D5000 so I think you understand its a no brainer, you will not use your D5000 after you get the D3300, its simply a much better camera!

A D3300 will serve well as a second camera.
Can we buy a D3300 new - body only?

From a usability and image quality perspective the D3300 will simply be a very slightly better camera - at best.

Both cameras have the same Multi-CAM 1000 AF module/detection range, the same 420 pixel RGB metering sensor, the same AEB, the same 1/4000 max shutter speed, yada, yada, yada.
The D5000's built-in flash unit is a bit more powerful then the D3330 flash unit.

No doubt the seller of the D3300 will appreciate you buying the camera.

Well I mean I see new D3300 Bodies on eBay in the sub-$300 range...couldn't hurt at that price right?

Well worth 300 for a new modern dslr

Yes I bought my D3300 body only but its uncommon, most come with their 18-55mm kit lens, they ordered especially from their warehouse so I waited one extra day to get it, no biggy.

I can tell you from my D5100 to my D3300 I noticed improvement in low light, also the AF feels better, I am no expert but I know what I know and feel what I feel, it is a very nice improvement over the D5100 so I think its will be an even better improvement over the D5000.

Check out these stats from DXO, in low light the D3300 kills the D5000

So I've noticed that the D7100 bodies are around $650 on eBay. This makes it interesting because I could sell my D5000 and get a 7100. The 3300 is so enticing though for the price. I mean, $300 for a body new is insane when it will be a better camera than the 5000.

Got some thinking to do.
