What is the Canon equivalent to the Nikon D40?

their lowest end recent model camer is the rebel XS, which has 10.1 megapixels. im not sure about the overall quality of the camera though

I'd say the XTi is about the equivalent, but that's all from what I have heard about them and specs, I've never actually shot either of the cameras

Yep, the XTi is similar. There are obviously differences though, which you should investigate. This is a bit of an odd question: do you want to buy Canon for a specific reason?
