D5000/d3100/500D which one?:O

Hello all,

I am looking into buying my first DSLR camera as I finally can afford one but it seems that I can't make up my mind and as I noticed the majority of beginners can't decide which one. I came up with these three DSLRs, Nikon D5000, Nikon D3100 and Canon 500D. (I haven't seen anything else to have in mind any suggestions are welcome)

To be honest I know there is no such thing as which camera is the best but I am really struggling to figure out which one to buy as my knowledge and ofcourse experience on cameras is poor but I love photography and I always wanted to buy one.

Any opinions from people who might own one of these or not and can help me decide is very much appreciated.

I seek a camera that apart form the superb photographs, can support my expectations for years just by upgrading for example lenses, will not get old soon enough and I won't feel the need of changing any time soon!

I've tested both D5000/500D except D3100 and it seems that I prefer the feeling of D5000 in hand etc but D3100 or 500D might be a better choice to go for.

Whats your budget?

I haven't looked at any comparisons but I imagine the D3100 will out perform the D5000 and the D5000 out performs the 500D. So the D3100 is probably what you should get!

My bugdet is around 650£ as I heard is enough to get me started with some quality products.

As this is my first DSLR I am not looking for something I might need to upgrade anytime soon but I have absolutely NO idea which one to pick and I am really confused, many people suggest D3100 and other D5000 claiming that is older meaning the specs are more high tech on the D3100, I don't know whether is older since the D3100 is only newer by 5 months I think.

More on that, I've found some good packs online such as, NIKON D3100/NIKON D5000 + AF-S DX 18-55 MM VR LENS + AF-S DX 55-200 MM VR LENS which both are at £610ish.

Any suggestions are more than welcome!

Go to snapsort.com and compare them. I had a D5000 and it is a great camera but I prefer the D3100. I like the larger fixed screen compared to D5000's swivel screen. The D3100 also has auto-focus video and the D5000's video does not auto-focus.

I had a similar choice to you, was going for 550D/D3100 for their low light performance and had tried both and ended up going for the D3100 as circumstances (went abroad, tax free airport shopping) made the D3100 £240 cheaper than the 550D would have been as the store had run out of them. Try them both out in a store and see which you get on with more.

Only thing to bear in mind is that they're quite small. I find it a good thing, I can hold it in a pen grip (though in reality I HAVE to hold it that way given that the camera is barely bigger than my palm ).

What do you think of D5000? Not good enough on low light and in general D3100 is better than D5000?
