D5100 lens

Why do you have to be a mile away from the elk to video tape it and hunt it? What are you using to shoot it with a barrett 50cal.?

It's a manual focus reflex lens. You'd be better of mounting the coke bottle Scraig mentioned earlier. Reflex lenses use a series of mirrors to focus the image - as a result your depth of field is going to be practically non-existant. It would take a ton of practice just to shoot a 5 second video of a stationary object and have it be at all reconizable - you can pretty much forget a moving target all together. You'd be real lucky to get a decent still image with one of these, much less shooting video.

Sorry, but again what your looking for simply doesn't exist.

Well if I remember my balisitic tables on the .308 you'd be looking at a bullet drop of... hmm. roughly 9 feet? Time to target would be about 4 seconds or so as I recall. So yup, that would be a nice shot for a .50 - well assuming you wanted to cut the deer in half.. lol. Or if the deer just happened to be riding around in an APC for some reason.

Thanks robbins. That was the only thing off the top of my head that I knew would have that kind of reach.

A 7mm rem mag or a 300 win mag would easily bring an elk down from a mile.
Also the elk isn't going to be running if he is moving he will be walking slowly most of the time will be feeding. And I said a mile away because at times it can get to that but most of the time its between 500-1000 yards. If I gave you $300 to spend on a lens what lens would you buy? Keep in mind you should be using this lens for videoing something about 500 yards away.

look at 1:00
What mm lens do you think they were using?

With the .50 your looking at a pretty effective kill radius of about a mile and half, longest shot I know of off the top of my head was something like 1.7 miles - but boy that had to have been a tough shot.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't - as I said earlier you'd just be throwing your money away. A 300 mm just isn't going to give you the reach you need, and it's about the only thing your going to be able to get in that price range. A good teleconverter plus the lens (if you went 300 mm) would get you closer, maybe close enough if you can stick closer to the 500 yd mark but a good teleconverter your looking at at least $200 and a good 300 mm is going to be close to the $300 mark used. Yes, you can get stuff that is cheaper, but it just won't do the job you want it to do - not even close. Go cheaper on the teleconverter and your video will look terrible - the image quality on even the best teleconverters isn't always the greatest. Go cheap on the lens and you loose autofocus, minute you get rid of autofocus you can pretty much write off the video completely, your can't manually focus at those ranges and get anything even remotely close to a usable video.

Sorry, but like I said earlier, what your looking for just cannot be effectively accomplished within your stated budget.

Yeah a marine made the shot it was a headshot the only reason he took the shot was because the guy was sniping his men, and it wasn't with a 50 cal, can we please get back on subject :)

So you come here and ask for help, and then wish to instruct me on which subjects are appropriate and which aren't? Ok, interesting. Well, I will wish you luck. I seriously doubt you'll have any, but I'll wish you luck anyway. Other than that, I'm pretty much done here I think.

I was just asking if we could start talking about lenses again. I was being nice I said please.

With $300 - I would not buy anything, because I know that any lens I buy at that price could not do what I want it to do.

Is there any lens that is worth buying for $300?
