If you are trying to say that it is in some way inferior, I disagree. Sure, some of it is - but the same is true of software you pay for.

I truly think that free and open source is the way of the future.

Not saying all freeware (I'd take Super Anti-spyware free version over Symatic any day).

But if you are installing something like Adobe Acrobat reader(PDF reader BTW) on a typical setting, you're also installing a lot of third party software (McAfee antivirus trial) that can affect your system.

I just run Malware Bytes. The WORST malware I've ever encountered are those fake anitvirus programs that have the power to completely shut down your ani-malware software and your access to the Internet.

And they actually seem sort of legit until you see all of the wording and misspellings. They're usually called something like "Windows Shield Plus" or something lol.

I had to reinstall Windows on an old computer because the malware trashed my OS

Those are a real pain in the anal canal, most rogue/ransom ware evolved to encrypting your entire HDD if you don't pay up, even disabling safe mode.

Stop 99% of it with 2 addons............. NoScript and AdBlock Plus.

Yes, but many adware is DOWNLOADED from a downloader, which is the thing to worry about.
And some of the stuff that is downloaded, alot of antivirus/trojan software doesn't see.

The first step of anything I run is TDSSKiller which,though may not find something, seems to "break" certain types of viruses after which antivirus software then is able to recognize it.

a real PITA no matter what.


but spybot, adwclearner and malwarebytes are the best for adware in my toolbox.
