I can make so many excuses for what went wrong and why I bombed this shoot, but what I walked out of here learning helped me stop beating myself up.
This was an experience worth having.

I don't see "bombed" in here anywhere; there's always room for improvement, but it's not bad at all. I especially like#2. A couple of minor niggles are the excessive DoF - I think these would have been a LOT stronger if she didn't have to compete with the all the medicine balls, and the reflections in said balls.

I really like #3, dont see how anything went wrong with that at all.

yea...#2 FTW!

Thanks for the boost guys. I appreciate it.

When I walked into this dance studio, and saw 20 ft tall mirrors surrounding me, I thought that I had bitten off more than I could chew.
A laundry list of things went wrong.

- Model showed up 45 minutes late with only a 2 hour studio reservation and she had to get her hair and makeup done which took another 45 minutes leaving me,
30 minutes to do headshots and full body poses in 2 different outfits.

- My initial plan was to use fall off to create a nice black background, but the mirrors made that a mathematical impossibility forcing me into the medicine ball corner
which is a nightmare of a background.

- I wanted to use a shorter focal length, but couldn't because the umbrellas would show.

- This was my first paid gig. And while I didn't charge much, from what I wanted to accomplish to what I actually got are 2 completely different beasts.

With the allotted time I did the best that I could do, and I just don't think it was good enough. Hind sight I could have done so many things different.
I even offered the model a reshoot if she absolutely hated them. I asked her to be extremely critical. She's a daughter of a family members friend.
Met them both for the first time last night at the shoot and they were so nice and likable Even gave me a generous tip making me feel even worse lol.

I'm going to clone out the specular highlights in number 1 and post. Maybe get #1 a bit stronger.

With this sharp outline, 'fixing' the background should be fairly easy.

Agree with Lew; heck you could just slide a gradient layer in behind her and leave just a little visible detail... shouldn't be too hard. As for you laundry-list... ummm.. where's the things that went wrong? Sounds like a typical day at the office to me!

I tried, but I can't do it without it looking "cut out". My shopping skills aren't quite there yet.

I guess it was my first day at the office so I was expecting everything to go fine for some reason lol.

I don't think you would have to drop the levels at the back too far tro make it really stand out.

Although I discovered if you drop it to black it gives a pretty convincing on-stage effect. Especially if you drop in a spotlight effect.

(Just realised you may not be ok to edit, so if thats the case I'll delete this pronto.

What the hell did you bomb? I put #2 up on the wall in the bedroom. Very nice...keep on bombing!

The execution of my vision is what I bombed. Thank you :)
