The DoF comment was directed at the OP, I believe. Slower shutter means more time for the subject to move before it closes = more blur.

Yes, but we're talking about dandelions in the wind here (moving objects). Slower shutter will not make the stem any sharper which is what photog4life was suggesting.

Yes, that's what I meant. I know the lower f stops = more blur and vice versa and i understand how shutter and iso are all linked-- but it's hard to wrap my brain around opening lens = lower f. I keep thinking open=higher f. I guess because I haven't fully learned how the camera works yet. Obviously... Just know the outcomes of changing the settings.

It's really very easy. What you've done is , confuse yourself.
You need to study depth of field first. This will help you understand exactly what an Fstop is.

Some might tell you there are three things that control exposure. They are a balancing act that work in unison.
Your shutter speed. Your Fstop. And your ISO.

There are two things that control exposure. Light, and time.
In camera , you have 3 ways to control this.
None of this stuff works without Light and time.

Light- yes, think I'm confused without my camera in hand. I shoot in manual so I've played with all 3 and purposely changed all and taken photos to see what happens when I change one, not the others, and kept changing until I got the correct exposure. Kinda like cheating or taking an open book test with my camera though. I'll study up and try and learn without my camera too!

Have a try with this:
CameraSim simulates a digital SLR camera - SLR Photography Demystified
Leave the settings on the left side (lighting, focal length, distance) alone and set the middle setting to manual. You've then got your ISO, shutter speed and aperture to control on the right side along with the "snap photo" command. Over the photo itself you've also got a simulated exposure meter. Adjust the settings, experiment and see how things change - look at the depth and motion aspects in particular - also use the meter - if its showing under exposure, compensate - and the same for over exposure.

Of course this means you might get dirty trying to get an image. You probably won't be able to sit around on tops of buildings picking off shyt that doesn't move and do it over if you screw up.

Hang out with me a bit and you may well get the first verifiable image of Bigfoot.
Can you imagine that? Under my tutelage ? You'll thank me for the rest of your life.
We'll spray you off at the local car wash afterwards.
Nobody will ever know that you actually got dirty going for an image. It'll be our secret.
