Personally, if I had a film camera, developing equipment and whatever else it takes and knew how to develop, I would LOVE to get into that. I'm falling more and more in love with B&W.

Ha, I would be completely be the same way if I had a film camera...I'm a perfectionist. Cake decorating is my first love and there were many times I didn't try a new technique for fear of messing up. I would have to force myself to do things, otherwise, I would never had learned anything.

Just shoot. Shoot everything. Hold up your cameras and hold down the shutter button if you need to do that to get in a groove.

I've taken tons of photos and most of them sucked. It's worth it if one of you takes one memorable photo...and you and your daughter will be making memories. You can't put a value on that.

i'm not afraid of having a bad shot.

Get over it. With 35mm my fail-rate is better than 90%. On a 36 shot roll, I'm happy with 3 keepers. If one of those keepers would hang on a wall, I'm very lucky. One roll is enough for 3 quick subjects. 12 images gives me room for a few different approaches plus bracketing around for exposure and focus.

It's not the digital age. It's the age when almost 200 years of technology and information is available to photographers and we can choose the tools and methods that suit us best.

The best pictures are not taken by the camera. Shared experience, shared bonds, shared moments are captured in your (and your daughter's) heart and are preserved forever. I've taken pictures before my daughters were born, and continued... They still open up the family albums (and there are many), when they come home, and we spend many hours looking over moments in our lives. But the best are moments of shared experience, captured in our minds and in our hearts. No camera can do that. So use the cameras with abandon, and treasure the moments they create for you and your daughter. I'm sure you will.

Sometimes good moments go unnoticed. Keep looking for happpiness, joy, love and the pictures will come out good. As for film vs digital, I can't wait myself to get my first film camera.

yep. I got over the performance anxiety and managed to click two rolls today each. Got a few worth keeping. Probably a few more too with some post processing.

A few years back, but not so long that digital was not well established, I also bought my daughter a film camera. A pentax K1000, a 50 mm lens, a vivitar flash, a tripod, a tank, some chemicals, a black bag, and a scanner able to do negatives. What a blast. Somehow the totally manual camera and a single lens slows the whole process down a bit. You end up taking the time to compose an image and think of the needed technicalities to get it done. You'll get a lot more keepers than you think. A twin lens reflex slows it down even more.

Have fun you two. The moments we spend with our children creating memories will keep us vibrant in their thoughts long after we've passed.
