oh my goodness...i think i figured it out...my index finger is in the way when I hold the camera vertical...i'm such a ding bat....okay we're getting somewhere now

No wonder . Because on the 2nd photo, it showed that the flash are working fine (based on the shadow behind the person). So it was not caused by the build-in flash.

Buy Understanding Exposure by bryan Peterson. Will help you to make sense of few things... Also, search for a local place that might offer photography classes maybe through a community programs.
