I really like your post. Sometimes a bit of difficulty or adversity is an excellent teacher. We never learn anything when everything goes perfectly. It's what we strive for but it seldom happens. As you gain experience and confidence you'll simply adjust and breeze on through.

Get a flash and a cheap diffuser. Don't be afraid to use them, they know you're there taking photos so you might as well help yourself to some lighting. Up your iso if you need to, a slightly grainy photo is much better than none at all.
